Readers will see whales, a brilliant orange octopus, a sea turtle, and spiny seahorses, among other deep sea denizens. The book begins with a sperm whale and ends with microscopic plankton, creating an opportunity to talk about the concept of size as well as learning about what lives in the ocean and how to protect it. The brief, poetic text evokes facts about each animal, and more information about the species pictured, oceans, and environmental threats to oceans is given in the back matter.
The art is stunning - each page is a frame-worthy silkscreen print-like tableau in bold colors. The cut-out holes become larger, and the eye/hole on the recto becomes larger and larger on the verso, creating a kaleidoscopic effect.
